Legislation that would allow people to carry concealed weapons in Florida without a permit would moved one step closer to becoming law. Last week, the House passed HB 543 on a party-line vote. SB 150, the Senate’s version has completed all of its committee stops and will be voted on this week. While we oppose this bill because of the impact it is likely to have on people of color in the state of Florida, we are grateful that an amendment that was proposed to allow open carry in the state failed. Both the House & Senate versions of the bill also seek to improve school safety by requiring local law enforcement to develop assailant response plans and for schools to form a threat assessment team. If you have strong opinions on these bills, or any future gun control legislation, contact your representatives and let them know you care, you’re watching, and most of all, you VOTE.
