The Republican Party has destroyed the State of Florida. But we can fix this.
The State of Florida has not had a Democratic Governor in 25 years, it has not had a Democratic Attorney General in 22 years, and has not had a Democratic Commissioner of Education in 29 years.
The Republicans have controlled the Florida State Senate since 1995 (29 years), and have controlled the State House of Representatives since 1997 (27 years).
The results of 30 years of Republican dominance in Florida –
- Florida ranks 20th in the country in the number of homeless people at +31,000.
- Florida ranks 4th in the country in the number of home foreclosures.
- Florida ranks 3rd in the country for gun deaths per year.
- Florida ranks 3rd in the country for number of reported rape incidents, with almost 11,000 per year. In contrast, only 1,819 rape arrests and 2,921 sex offense arrests.
- Florida has a prison population that exceeds 87,000, ranking it 3rd in the nation.
- Florida leads the nation in mass shootings in 2024, with 18 to date, two more than the same time period last year.
- Florida has a probation population of over 204,000 people, plus over 3,400 under parole, which ranks it #5th highest in the nation.
- Since 1970, the rate of incarceration in the state of Florida has more than tripled.
- Florida has over 32,000 registered sex offenders, ranking it 7th in the nation—a 62% increase since 2005.
- Florida has the 8th lowest literacy rate in the U.S., with only 76.3% of its adult population having basic or below basic literacy skills, putting it 32nd in the nation.
- Florida is 3rd in the nation in poverty behind California and Texas, with over 2.8 million residents (13.1% of the population) falling under the poverty rate.
- Florida’s Gun Death Rate increased 15% from 2011 to 2020, and gun homicides increased 40%, making it the 19th highest rate of gun violence in the U.S.
