We are living in the time of political chaos. Trump’s “flood the zone” strategy is causing good people to turn away, instead of turning toward their fear and fighting for our rights.
Possibly the most egregious attack by Trump, Musk and the Republicans who won’t defend us against them is their effort to shut down the Department of Education. Think back to one of his earliest viral moments: “I love the uneducated!” His effort to eliminate the Department of Education, combined with using the WOKE theme to eliminate research and educational funding from our universities, is literally stripping the United States of our ability to read, research, employ critical thinking, and come up with solutions to save ourselves from his full-on authoritarian takeover.
Given our almost non-existent leverage, and lack of actual power to stop the insanity, the one thing Democrats, Independents, NPAs, and sensible Republicans can still do to slow the destruction is to make Trump unpopular.
An unpopular Trump will struggle to pass his agenda. He gets less cooperation from minions to dismantle our government. And most critical, he is more likely to lose control of Congress in the midterms, which are now just 17 months away. We need to continue to pushback on his efforts to abolish the Department of Education. This Republican plan was used as a campaign point by Reagan in the 1980s, was resurrected by Newt Gingrich in the 1900s, and became such an unpopular stance that Bush increased funding for education as an initiative.
A majority of voters across age and education lines oppose an executive action to abolish the U.S. Department of Education, according to the Data for Progress survey conducted in February.
A similar Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 65% of voters, and 40% of Republicans also opposed eliminating the Department of Education.
This is our opportunity to network with friends and neighbors of all political stripes, informed or not, activists or apathetic citizens, and rally them behind a cause. Let’s not waste it.
