Protect Social SecurityThere are at least five bills in Congress waiting to be debated to shore up our earned benefits.

  • Rep. John Larson, Social Security 2100 Act: A Sacred Trust – This bill provides caregiver credits toward Social Security wages to ensure caregivers are not penalized in retirement for taking time out of the workforce to care for children or other dependents. Extends Social Security dependent benefits for students to age 26 and for part-time students so they can continue their education. Increases access to Social Security dependent benefits for children who live with grandparents or other relatives.
  • Rep. Gwen Moore, Social Security Enhancement and Protection Act – Would increase the special minimum benefit that is paid to workers who have spent long careers in relatively low-wage employment. It also recognizes the value of childrearing by allowing credits of up to five years toward the minimum benefit when a parent leaves the workforce or reduces participation in the workforce for the purpose of caring for a child under age six.
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders, Social Security Expansion Act – Would give all Americans confidence that Social Security will be there for them when they need it, whether they apply for retirement or disability benefits. Moreover, it achieves this while at the same time making important updates to the benefits Social Security provides.
  • Sen. Brian Schatz, SAFE Social Security Act – Would update and modernize Social Security benefits and extend the solvency of the Social Security Trust Funds to the year 2050.
  • Rep. John Garamendi, Fair COLA for Seniors Act – Would require the use of the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly for the purpose of determining cost-of-living adjustments for a broad array of Federal retirement programs, including Social Security. Using the CPI-E will ensure that benefits for retirees are not diminished by rising costs in the goods and services that seniors disproportionately consume.
