Explaining the Big Beautiful Bill
A July 1, 2025 article in The Economist was illustrated with 10 charts explaining Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”, which should be called the “Big, Bogus Bill” based on the horrific outcomes for Americans, many of the worst which won’t take effect until after the 2026 midterms. The gallery below includes many of these charts for reference.

- Kicking off this historically bad legislation is an increase of our nation’s debt by $3-4 trillion (that’s TRILLION, not billion). Our nation’s current national debt is approximately $36 trillion. Trump’s BBB will increase our national debt by more than 10%, or approximately $10,000 per person in the U.S.. Fiscal conservatism? Really?
- It reduces our nation’s GDP. In other words, our nation’s economy will shrink as a result. Why? Because increased national debt will result in higher interest rates for the government, but also for everyone else. That will shrink the economy.
- It will grow our nation’s debt as a percentage of our nation’s GDP. Right now, our nation’s national debt is approximately $36 trillion, but our nation’s GDP is approximately $30 trillion, making our nation’s debt as a percentage of our nation’s GDP over 100%. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” will result in our national debt as a percentage of the nation’s GDP climbing to 125%. This has never happened before in history. It will tank the bond market. People will stop buying U.S. bonds, which will crash the dollar.
- It increases the interest payments on our nation’s debt as a percentage of our nation’s GDP, bringing it to almost 6%.
- It cuts SNAP funding, and hurts various states more than others. Red states will suffer the most. People will go hungry. Children will go hungry.
- This bill hurts the poorest Americans—those earning under $51,000—the hardest, and benefits the wealthiest Americans the most, making the corporate and top income earners’ tax breaks PERMANENT. Currently, the tax rate on these Americans is less than half what it was in the 1950s.
- Approximately 16 million Americans will lose health insurance, with various states hurt the most. Florida will see almost 2 million residents lose their healthcare insurance, the second largest number in the country.
- Both of Florida’s senators, Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, as well as every single Republican Representative—including Kat Cammack, Neal Dunn, and Randy Fine—voted in favor of this bill.
- This bill also decimates the impact on our ability to fight climate change, one our country’s greatest challenges, including removing clean energy tax credits, and pulling funding from clean energy infrastructure projects that were funded by Biden’s Infrastructure bill, and provided 1,000s of jobs around the country.
Trump’s Big Bogus Bill is fiscally irresponsible (Trump did bankrupt six companies with too much debt), hurts the poorest Americans, costs millions their health insurance (people will die as a result), and undermines efforts to address climate change, and that’s just barely scratching the surface. This summary is just a fraction of the harm it will cause. It will also adversely affect seniors and the disabled who rely on Medicaid, and supercharge the Immigration army that’s currently running rogue over us from coast to coast.
