2024 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION DELEGATE SELECTION
On Saturday, April 13th, Florida will elect its Congressional District Level Delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, IL, August 19 – 22, 2024. The Florida Democratic Presidential primary will NOT be held on March 19 th as scheduled since President Joe Biden is the only candidate recommended to the Secretary of State by the FDP. Please note the process to be on the Florida Democratic primary ballot was made publicly available and clearly states that the deadline to submit nominations for the ballot must be submitted to the Secretary of State by November 30, 2023.
This is the standard process: The Florida Democratic Party followed its process, and the State Executive Committee voted unanimously to send one name, Joe Biden, to the Secretary of State as a candidate for the party’s nomination for president. It is not uncommon for an incumbent President to be declared the automatic winner of a presidential primary. In 2011, Florida Democrats similarly voted unanimously for incumbent President Barack Obama. The Florida Democratic Party stands by the decision made by the State Executive Committee. It does not intend to circumvent long-established protocols and procedures for candidates who did not receive nominations.”
The Florida Delegate Selection Plan requires each Congressional District to have at least one delegate selection caucus on April 13, 2024, between 10 am and 2 pm. That caucus must be located within the boundaries of the Congressional District. Congressional Districts have the option of holding additional caucuses in the District on Saturday, April 13, and the option of allowing early voting on Thursday, April 11th.
DELEGATE ALLOCATIONS
- Congressional District Level Delegates are allocated based on a formula that includes the number of registered Democrats in each CD and the number of votes cast for the Democratic nominee for both President and for Governor in the most recent elections where those elections were held.
- Under the FDP Delegate Selection plan, district-level delegates will be elected at caucuses on SATURDAY, APRIL 13, 2024, from 10:00 am until noon.
- Congressional Districts have the option of allowing early voting for delegates on THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2024. Hours are flexible.
- Proposed caucus sites must be finalized and reported to the FDP no later than FEBRUARY 5,
2024
TYPES OF DELEGATES
There are four types of delegates to a Democratic National Convention:
- CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT LEVEL DELEGATES – This is the largest group of delegates, and it is their selection you will oversee. Florida is entitled to 146 Congressional District Level Delegates.
- PARTY LEADER AND ELECTED OFFICIAL DELEGATES – The Congressional District Level Delegates at the State Delegate Selection convention will elect these delegates. Florida has 29 PLEO Delegates.
- AT LARGE DELEGATES – These delegates will be elected by the Congressional District at the State Delegate Selection convention. Florida is allocated 49 At Large Delegates and 19 At Large Alternates.
- AUTOMATIC DELEGATES – Commonly called “Super Delegates.” These are DNC members, Congressional Members, former DNC Chairs, and US Presidents. They are delegates by the office they hold or have held. The number allocated to Florida is currently 26, but it could fluctuate.
Information regarding the registration process to become a delegate candidate and location for
elections will be announced ASAP.
