As January 6th, 2021 brought reality to the forefront of our minds, whether or not we were prone to follow politics and government in general, that infamous date has returned again.

Important points surrounding January 6th —
• Trump carried out a multipart plan over several months, aided by his closest associates, which began with accusing elections of being rigged and stolen, i.e. “The Big Lie”.
• The investigation included more than 1,000 witness interviews and more than 1 million pages of documents, obtained after the panel issued more than 100 subpoenas.

What we’ve learned in the two years since is that not only do we have a much more fragile hold on our democracy than we’ve ever imagined, but it will take every one of us doing some small part to keep it. Today, we ask all of you to incorporate one item into your New Year Resolutions to put mortar into the wall of strength that will keep democracy intact for all Americans. Here are a few suggestions—

Keep an eye on the Supreme Court: When a 50 year old justice who is bought and paid for by theocratic authoritarian minded organizations, our personal freedoms and democracy itself is in danger for decades to come. An excellent place to keep your finger on the pulse is by following legal Superman Mark Elias’ Democracy Docket wherever you go for social media. He also has a website and daily newsletter. He is fighting for our rights every day. Check out Democracy Docket here.

Hold your representatives accountable: Call, write or email your Representatives and Senators when important issues are being addressed by Congress. Resistbot is an easy way to do this through texting. It’s a free to use, non-profit service that allows you to compose or use pre-written messages through your phone’s texting that go right to your representatives in under two minutes. Text RESIST to 50409 to contact your federal, state or local elected officials.

In the coming weeks, you’ll begin to see changes on the MarionDems.org website that will offer more ways to participate and stay informed, and we hope it will become a frequently visited and useful tool for you.

As documentary filmmaker Michael Moore put it, we may be a “blue dot in a red sea”, but with a little effort from all of our “blue dots” here in Marion County, we can make a difference. Marion County Democratic Party invites you to become a member in 2023 and join us as we continue to hold on to our precious democracy.
